Marquee vs Venue Brisbane: Which Is Actually Cheaper?
An honest breakdown — no spin. When marquee hire saves you money, when it doesn't, and what venues don't tell you about corkage.
Real Cost Comparison for Brisbane Events
The venue vs marquee comparison is more nuanced than it first appears. Venue pricing typically covers only the room hire — catering, beverages, staffing, AV, and corkage are all added on top. Marquee pricing gives you an empty structure that you fill however you like. To compare fairly, you need to look at total event cost, not just the hire fee.
Brisbane Venue Hire
Marquee Hire Package
Example: A 100-person event at a mid-range Brisbane venue: $5k room hire + $80 catering per head + $45 beverage per head = $17,500 before a single decoration goes up. The same 100 guests in a 8m × 15m marquee with flooring, lighting, and delivery: $5,500–$7,000 in marquee costs, then you spend whatever you choose on catering and drinks. The saving can be $8,000–$12,000 — enough to meaningfully upgrade the catering or add a live band.
The Real Advantages of Marquee Events
No corkage. Bring your own drinks.
At a venue, corkage fees can run $35–$70 per head for BYO wine at a 100-person wedding — that's $3,500–$7,000 just to drink wine you bought yourself. With a marquee on your own property, there's no corkage. You buy from a bottle shop, arrange a mobile bar, or arrange a kegged beer setup. The savings are significant and the quality is often better.
Your catering, your caterer.
Venues lock you into their preferred caterers — often at $80–$120 per head for food that may not be to your standard. A marquee gives you open catering choice. A great food truck, a trusted family caterer, a BBQ company, or a proper sit-down caterer you've personally vetted. You can also self-cater for family functions without any restrictions.
Location flexibility — backyard, farm, family property.
A marquee goes where you need it. Parent's acreage for a milestone birthday. Your backyard for a landmark anniversary. A farm property for a relaxed outdoor wedding. You're not constrained to locations that have a licensed venue on site. For Brisbane families with some outdoor space to work with, this is often the biggest factor.
Style customisation without venue restrictions.
Venues come with their own aesthetic — often a mix of dark carpet, AV rigs you don't want, and existing decor you're fighting against. A clearspan marquee is a blank canvas. Festoon lighting strung across the ceiling, custom linen, flooring of your choice, your florals, your signage. You're not working around what's already there.
Full weather protection, Queensland weather-ready.
Our clearspan marquees have a full PVC roof rated to 80km/h winds. Queensland summer storms arrive fast — a proper clearspan marquee handles rain, wind, and heat (with appropriate cooling). A venue has air conditioning; a marquee has walls and a structurally sound roof. With the right setup, weather is a non-issue.
When a Venue Genuinely Makes More Sense
We'd rather be honest than oversell marquees for every situation. Here are the cases where a venue is the smarter choice:
No suitable outdoor space. If you don't have access to a property with adequate outdoor space — and there's no family property or friend's block you can use — a venue is the only realistic option. Marquees need land.
Very small guest count. Under 30 guests, a small private dining room or restaurant hire will often be more cost-effective and less logistically complex than a full marquee setup.
Zero coordination bandwidth. Marquee events require you to coordinate delivery access, setup timing, power, catering logistics, and pack-down. A venue handles all of that internally. If the idea of coordinating multiple vendors sounds like a nightmare and you'd rather have one point of contact who manages everything, a full-service venue is worth the premium.
Strict noise restrictions in your area. Residential noise curfews apply regardless of whether you're in a marquee or a backyard. If your neighbours are known complainants or you're in a very dense residential area, a licensed venue with soundproofing may be more suitable for a late-night event.
