How to Choose the Right Marquee Size

A practical guide to matching your guest count, layout style, and extras to the right clearspan marquee size.

The Rule of Thumb: Space Per Person

Before you look at specific marquee dimensions, start with space per person. The industry standard figures for marquee events are:

1.5–2m²
Banquet Seated
Round tables, chairs all sides. Use 2m² if you want comfortable flow between tables.
1m²
Cocktail Style
Standing, high cocktail tables, no assigned seats. Tighter but feels energetic.
+2.5m²
Per Dance Guest
Add this per dancing guest on top of your seating allocation. A 4×4m floor covers ~6 dancers at once.

These numbers assume tables, chairs, and access aisles only. As soon as you add extras — a bar station, a DJ booth, a catering bench, a stage — those elements eat into usable floor space and need to be factored in separately.

Guest Count to Marquee Size — Quick Reference

Based on banquet-style seating. Size up one row if adding a dance floor or stage.

Guest Count Recommended Size Area Notes
15–30 guests 6×3m 18m² Intimate garden parties, backyard birthdays. No dance floor.
30–50 guests 6×6m 36m² Comfortable for seated meals. Cocktail style fits up to 60.
50–80 guests 6×9m 54m² Popular for birthday parties and christenings. Can fit a small dance floor.
80–120 guests 6×12m or 8×6m 72–48m² 8m width gives better table layouts. 6×12m works where the site is long and narrow.
120–180 guests 8×9m 72m² Our most-booked wedding size. Fits 10 round tables of 10 plus a dance floor and bar.
180–250 guests 8×12m 96m² Large weddings and corporate events. Add 8×15m for very generous spacing.
250–350 guests 8×18m 144m² Large-scale events. Consider multiple marquees joined together for better layout flexibility.
350+ guests Contact us 200m²+ We'll design a modular configuration. Multiple marquees with connecting walkways may suit best.

All sizes above are clearspan, no centre poles. Sizing based on banquet-style seating at 2m² per person.

What Reduces Your Usable Floor Space

The guest count table above assumes tables and chairs only. In real events, the following features take up floor space and need to be subtracted before you calculate how many guests fit:

Dance Floor

A 3×3m floor takes 9m². A 4×4m takes 16m². Always position the dance floor before laying out tables — it should be central with clear sightlines from the bridal or head table.

Catering Station

A professional caterer typically needs 2–3m of bench space plus aisle clearance behind it. Allow at least 6–8m² for a catering setup at the rear or side of the marquee.

Bar Station

A freestanding bar takes 4–6m² plus a guest queue zone. If you're running a tab bar with a cold room nearby, position it at the side wall to keep traffic flow out of the dining area.

DJ Booth or Band Stage

A DJ setup takes roughly 4m². A small band stage (4×3m) takes 12m² plus clearance. Stages at the end wall are most efficient — they frame the room without eating into the centre.

Head / Bridal Table

A 6-seat bridal table on its own needs roughly 8m² with aisle clearance. If you want the bridal party on a raised platform, add the stage area to your floor plan.

Entry / Photo Zone

Arbours, photo booths, and guestbook tables often sit inside the marquee near the entrance. Budget 4–6m² at the entry end if you're including these elements.

When to Size Up — Always Err Generous

There is no award for squeezing the maximum number of people into the minimum possible marquee. Guests notice when they're comfortable — they remember it too. When you're on the edge of two sizes, go bigger. The cost difference between adjacent sizes is rarely significant compared to your overall event budget.

Size up if your guest list might grow — RSVPs are always optimistic and final numbers often come in 10–15% higher than your initial estimate. Size up if you're having speeches longer than 10 minutes (guests need comfort). Size up if your caterer is doing plated courses rather than buffet — staff need clear aisles.

The size finder tool on our website lets you input your guest count, layout style, and extras — it calculates the minimum size and recommends a comfortable size with a price for each. Use it as a starting point, then call us to confirm with your specific site dimensions.

Marquee Sizing FAQ

How much space do I need per person in a marquee?+

For banquet seated (round tables), allow 1.5–2m² per person. For cocktail style (standing, high tables) allow 1m² per person. If you're adding a dance floor, add 2.5m² per dancing guest on top of your seated count.

What size marquee fits 100 people?+

For 80–120 guests seated banquet style, a 6×12m or 8×6m marquee is the standard recommendation. For cocktail style, a 6×9m is often sufficient. Always size up if you're adding a dance floor, staging, or catering station inside the marquee.

Can I add a dance floor and still seat everyone?+

Yes, but you need to account for the floor space. A 4×4m dance floor takes 16m². Add that area to your seating space requirement and choose the next marquee size up. Our size finder tool does this calculation for you automatically.

Is it better to go bigger or smaller on marquee size?+

Always size up rather than down. A marquee that's slightly too big looks generous and comfortable. A marquee that's slightly too small makes every problem worse — cramped tables, no flow, and unhappy caterers who can't serve properly. The cost difference between adjacent sizes is usually modest.
